When someone’s heart is submitted to God, you can see it in their actions.

Many people struggle to obey, but why? Simply, they haven’t chosen to submit their hearts to God in some areas. They have some pride and maybe some hyper independence because they have been neglected. There may be a need to be in control because they have been out of control or controlled by another at some point in their lives.

Everyone has stuff in the corners of their heart—you know, the dark ugly places that come up to say hello every now and then. We would call it a bad attitude, defensive, overreacting, emotional, having a fear of missing out, arrogant, touchy, jealous, selfish, or rebellious.

These are all symptoms of an unsubmitted heart. And if you have ever been “lost” at some point, you have probably used some of these as coping mechanisms to hide your pain rather than submitting it to God. The danger is, a heart that is unsubmitted to God will end up submitting to something else, because we were designed with the capacity to submit.

Rebellion Is Witchcraft

My heart became emotionally shut down after trauma; hyper independence, self-sufficiency, and rebellion began in the literal form of witchcraft. Entertaining powers not of God swung wide the door to the enemy working in my body, almost to the point of death several times.

Some people think this can’t happen to a true man or woman of God. Well, it happened to King Saul! He was God’s first choice before David, but unlike David, Saul’s heart was not submitted to God. He lied to cover his mistakes rather than repent like David did. Saul was more submitted to the opinions of others than what God said about him. He bowed to pressure, lost his kingdom, and fell into witchcraft (1 Samuel 15:22-23). And it all started with an unsubmitted heart. Scripture says that rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft.

The condition of my heart—through no fault of my own—became fertile ground for the work of the enemy. The victim mindset is like an incubator for every evil work. It is extremely damaging to the individual and those around them. Only the strong will break free from it, even though freedom is available, because the temporary comfort that it brings is so inviting. Change happens in hearts when the pain of staying in the pit becomes greater than the effort required to climb out of it.
